Legislators met with Kristie Fisher and Nicole Hill in the Senate Chamber on April 17. They were representing Kirkwood Community College women's basketball team, which was honored with Senate Resolution 153 for winning the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament. On April 14, the Iowa Senate honored the talented young men and women who make up the 2007-2008 Drake University men's and women's basketball teams. Congratulations to the athletes and coaches, Keno Davis and Amy Stephens, on an incredible season.  Their efforts have elevated the Bulldogs to rank among the best teams in the nation.
On April 1, Gov. Chet Culver signed Senate File 2347 into law, providing $4.6 million to create a statewide system of optical scan voting machines before the November elections. This new law will give Iowans a verified paper record of the ballot they cast and will guarantee that voters with disabilities have the same opportunity to use a protected voting system.  On hand for the bill signing, from left: Sen. Rob Hogg and his daughter Dorothy, Culver, and Sen. Brian Schoenjahn of Arlington.
On March 26, Governor Chet Culver signed what will be the biggest tax break of the 2008 session. House File 2417, which passed the Legislature earlier this session, will save Iowa taxpayers $67.5 million dollars by exempting state taxes on the federal tax rebates that are part of the economic stimulus plan approved by Congress.
The Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church sponsored a Moral Witness for Children rally at the Capitol on Jan. 30.  These young Iowans reminded legislators to consider children, and especially children in poverty, during our deliberations this session.
Kirkwood Community College students traveled to Des Moines on Jan. 30 to meet with Senator Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids. Iowa’s community colleges provide the training Iowans need to move up in life and the skilled workers the state’s economy needs to grow. Hogg told the students that he will support increased funding for community colleges in order to keep tuition affordable.  From left: Lindsay Aldrich, Scott JohnsonMartin, Allison Nunnikhoven, Tatyana Reinboldt, Jon Willoughby, Josh Thomas, Jennifer VanDee, Nick, Kettmann, and Hogg.
A wide variety of groups dedicated to protecting and improving Iowa’s soil, air, and water braved the bitter cold to visit the Statehouse on January 24.  I met with Rich Dana and Gregg Heide of the Iowa Renewable Energy Association. Heide is a Pomeroy farmer, who is working to increase the presence of wind energy in the state. Left to right: Rich Dana of Guernsey, me, Senate President Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg, and Heide.

A hybrid school bus used by Sigourney schools was shown to Iowa school board members, legislators and state media on Tuesday at the Iowa Statehouse.  The buses get almost twice as many miles per gallon as regular buses and can travel 30 miles on electricity alone.  The Iowa Association of School Boards brought the buses to the Iowa Statehouse.  Linn-Mar Community School District school board members looked the bus over with Senator Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids, a member of the Senate Natural Resources and Environment Committee and an advocate of energy independence for Iowa.  (1/22/08) Credit: Iowa Senate interns Desiree Jackson and Jisoo Lee.

State Senator Rob Hogg of Cedar Rapids met with Governor Chet Culver at the Iowa Statehouse on Monday to discuss the best ways to stand up for middle-class families and to continue responsible, prudent budget-making. Hogg and other legislators from across Iowa were at the Capitol to discuss priorities for the 2008 session, which convenes January 14.  Last year’s budget left the state in better financial condition than the year before, and Hogg and other legislators pledged to repeat that accomplishment.  Pictured, from left: Hogg and Culver.  (12/3/2007)
