Senator Joe Seng of Davenport addressed members of the Iowa Association for Choice in Education and nonpublic school students on the west steps of the Statehouse. Sen. Seng discussed the Educational Opportunities Act and other state programs to help parents cover the costs of sending their children to nonpublic schools.
On March 26, Governor Chet Culver signed what will be the biggest tax break of the 2008 session. House File 2417, which passed the Legislature earlier this session, will save Iowa taxpayers $67.5 million dollars by exempting state taxes on the federal tax rebates that are part of the economic stimulus plan approved by Congress.
Sen. Joe Seng attended the Association of Iowa Workforce Partners legislative breakfast on March 11, where he visited with Sherrill Konrad of Davenport, who is working toward her AA in business administration at Scott Community College with the help of Iowa at Work.  They discussed how Iowa’s workforce programs train and educate workers for the future. The Association of Iowa Workforce Partners is a statewide network that matches Iowans with employment and educational opportunities that make them more productive and self-sufficient.

Governor Chet Culver signed a bill increasing the state's contribution to local schools by 4 percent on Feb. 12.  The appropriation, which passed the Legislature last week, provides our K12 schools with an additional $222 per student.  The money is used for textbooks, heating bills, technology and other necessities that help make students, teachers and schools successful.  Left to right: Sen. Bishops, priests and other members of the Iowa Catholic Conference were at the Statehouse on Feb. 12 to talk with legislators about issues important to the Catholic Church and society.  As a part of the day's activities, Bishop Martin Amos of Davenport served as Pastor of the Day, giving the opening prayer in both the House and the Senate.  Pictured in the House Chamber, from left: Sen. Senator Joe Seng of Davenport opened the 2008 legislative session January 14 at the Iowa Statehouse with his clerk, Ben Humphrey, a Drake Law School student. Seng said his top priority is economic development and growing the Iowa economy so that we have the resources to invest in health care, education, property tax reform, and natural resources.  Seng also hopes to see more state dollars invested in tourism and spreading the word about all that Iowa has to offer.
