A study committee examining the care of companion animals by commercial breeders had its first public meeting at the Statehouse on September 29. Representative Jim Lykam and I co-chair the committee. We heard testimony from many organizations, including Iowa Voters for Companion Animals, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, the Humane Society, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, the Iowa Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal, and the Iowa Pet Breeders Association. The Iowa Senate recently passed a bill allowing qualified military veterans, their spouses and dependent children to qualify as “residents” for purposes of tuition and fees at Iowa community colleges and universities. Due to the efforts of State Senator Joe Seng of Davenport, the legislation allows those stationed at Rock Island arsenal to qualify for resident tuition and fees.
Senator Tom Hancock and I met with members of the Farm Bureau from Jones and Dubuque counties in the Senate chamber on March 17. They were at the Capitol for Agriculture Day on the Hill.
Paul Fredenburg of Davenport, a member of the Iowa State Police Association, spoke with me March 12 about his organizations efforts to promote professionalism in Iowa Law Enforcement through communication, education and legislation.
YMCA held their annual legislative breakfast at the Statehouse on March 11. The YMCA serves thousands of Iowans through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body. I met with Frank Klipsch from the Davenport YMCA at the breakfast.
About 40 high school students, along with teachers and school board members from Davenport, visited the Capitol in February to see government in action. During lunch, legislators spoke with the group and took questions and input from students on bills currently under discussion. I was honored to meet with these bright young people and appreciate their interest in making Iowa a better place.
I had the opportunity to meet with my cousin, Stacy Joiner, at the Statehouse on March 3. She works for Iowa State University and was here for the Institute for Physical Research and Technology legislative breakfast.
I attended the School Administrators of Iowa legislative breakfast at the Statehouse and had the opportunity to talk with Administrators from across the state.

I met with Jerry Hadenfeldt at the Statehouse on Tuesday. He was here for the "Health Freedom" Day on the Hill.

U.S. Representative Bruce Braley spoke to our caucus on Tuesday, February 17.  He discussed the opportunities for Iowa in the recently passed federal stimulus bill.  He said the legislation will create 37,000 Iowa jobs by rebuilding crumbling roads and bridges, investing in passenger rail and putting people to work on aviation, water and flood control projects.

On February 10, I had the opportunity to meet with educators from Scott Community College. They were visiting the Statehouse for the Iowa State Education Association's community college day. Three community college students visited the State Capitol on February 4 to thank lawmakers who supported Iowa’s wind energy expansion efforts. Student Grant Erickson talked with me about continuing support for Iowa’s community colleges and the Iowa Power Fund. A two-year program at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville to train students to learning to build and maintain wind turbines will grow from 71 students this year to 102 students next year. Graduates typically receive 10 to 20 job offers when they complete their courses.
